Collected Stories 2 - Second Variety and Other Classic Stories

Philip K. Dick

Science Fiction & Fantasy / Literature & Fiction / Nonfiction

The stories within SECOND VARIETY were written between 1952 and 1955, while America was in the grip of McCarthyism. The concerns of the time are reflected in stories such as "Second Variety", which tells of an endless war fought by ever more cunning and sophisticated robots, or  "Imposter" where a man accused of being an alien spy finds his whole identity called into question. Using his marvellously varied, quirky and idiosyncratic style, Dick speaks up for ordinary people against militarism, paranoia and xenophobia.  Stories In This VolumeThe Cookie LadyBeyond the DoorSecond VarietyJon's WorldThe Cosmic PoachersProgenySome Kinds of LifeMartians Come in CloudsThe CommuterThe World She WantedA Surface RaidProject: EarthThe Trouble with BubblesBreakfast at TwilightA Present for PatThe Hood MakerOf Withered ApplesHuman IsAdjustment TeamThe Impossible PlanetImposterJames P. The Ganymede Takeover

The Ganymede Takeover

Philip K. Dick

Science Fiction & Fantasy / Literature & Fiction / Nonfiction

First published, in paperback, in 1967, this is one of two novels Dick wrote in collaboration. Stylistically, it is typical Dick, but it lacks the gravity and conviction of most of his other novels. It's set in the 21st century when the Earth has been conquered by a race of alien, telepathic, wormlike creatures, one of whom, Mekkis, is attracted to the theories of the psychologist Rudolph Balkani. Although ostensibly a "wik" or worm-kisser (i.e., one who freely serves the Ganymedians), Balkani is a complex man whose allegiances and motives are not easily discerned; indeed, Mekkis's attraction to his ideas leads to the worms' undoing. Other characters include the musicologist Joan Hiashi, whom Balkani unsuccessfully pursues, and Percy X, the black revolutionary who represents the ony overt resistance to the worms. Characterizations are unusually weak for Dick, and the ultimate instrument of the alien downfall--Dr. Balkani's "hell-machine," which distorts reality--cannot summon up in the reader the ontological confusion and terror that drives Dick's best work. Electric Dreams

Electric Dreams

Philip K. Dick

Science Fiction & Fantasy / Literature & Fiction / Nonfiction

The Stories Behind the Series Though perhaps most famous as a novelist, Philip K. Dick wrote more than one hundred short stories over the course of his career, each as mind-bending and genre-defining as his longer works. Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams collects ten of the best. In "Autofac," Dick shows us one of the earliest examples (and warnings) in science fiction of self-replicating machines. "Exhibit Piece" and "The Commuter" feature Dick exploring one of his favorite themes: the shifting nature of reality and whether it is even possible to perceive the world as it truly exists. And "The Hanging Stranger" provides a thrilling, dark political allegory as relevant today as it was when Dick wrote it at the height of the Cold War. Strange, funny, and powerful, the stories in this collection highlight a master at work, encapsulating his boundless imagination and deep understanding of the human condition.
